Rainbow 6 Vegas Review

After my comments on the forum regarding lag switches etc, I said Id never
buy another shoot em up.  Cos theres nothing worse then trying to shoot
someone who is constantly jumping around and dissapearing then re-appearing
where you least expect it.

Then came Rainbow 6 Vegas.

You start off in a chopper, after alighting the aircraft you have to meet up
with your "team", then its off to do mission after mission ranging from
capturing held hostages, or simply kiiling all the terrorists on a given
map.  I wont mention all the different objectives as if you purchase the
game I dont want to ruin the suprise.

The game is played from a first person view and a third person view, to
switch between the two you simply get up close to say a wall and press R1,
your view is instantly changed to the third person view.  As with Socom, and
those who have played it will tell you, third person view is great for
hiding but at the same time allows you to see around corners, over walls
etc. Ideal for an ambush situation.

The real crunch for Rainbow is the multiplayer online mode,  When worked in
conjuction with your friends and collegues. You have the options of online
co-op story mode (up to 4 players), terrorist hunt (again up to four
players), but immensely difficult on the hardest level.  The main meal is
served up in rooms off up to 14 players, with again loads of diffirent modes
to play with Attack and Defend and Bomb Retreival to name but 2.  I wont
mention more for the above noted reason.

Attack and defend

Depending on the map, each side is given a certain objective for example
Border Town.  This sees one side having to rescue 2 hostages, whilst the
opposing side has to stop you at all costs.  Another example is a map called
Dante's which sees one side that has to defuse the bomb before the timer
runs out, whilst the opposing side again has to stop you, at all costs.

Bomb Retreival

A bomb is placed on the map for the 2 sides to capture, the bomb must then
be taken to a disposal unit, where once you've disposed of the bomb its off
to capture another.  The team with the most points, or the team that kills
the opposing side wins.

Both of these modes plus the others I haven't mentioned are great for
working on tactics, and the more important team bonding.  You get a great
sense of achievement when things go the way you plan them!!

As host of an Online game you are able to custom your room as you wish,
whether you want respawn on or off, certain restrictions such as no grenades
etc.  The main plus point for me is the option of booting people who "lag",
this issue has been around a while.  And personally its nice to be able to
control it to a certain extent. Though some sort of ping next to the name
would help determine who the offending party is.

Except for a few technical issues with the software, eg loss of sound,
random disconnections that can leave you a little disheartened sometimes.
The game generally is very sound, and an ideal investment for those who
enjoy good team play.

My rating out of 10

If it wasn't for the few issues online, (which is more common place with the
3G consoles and not just the Ps3), I would give this game a 9 out of 10.
But with the issues taken on board id give it 8.5 out of 10.

If you liked Socom 2 you'll love this.
